This KIND of Church: The Seed Determines the Harvest

When you look at the landscape of the modern church, it’s easy to ask ourselves an honest question: Does the church we are building today look like the KIND of church Jesus established in Scripture?

It’s one thing to read about the early church in the Book of Acts—the supernatural miracles, the radical unity, the daily growth, and the unstoppable passion. But reading about them isn’t enough. We want to look like them.

To understand how to get there, we have to go back to the very beginning of Creation and look at a fundamental law of God’s Kingdom.

The Kingdom Principle of Mîn (Kind)

In Genesis chapter 1, God set in motion a spiritual and physical law that governs everything that grows:

“And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself… And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind…”— Genesis 1:11–12 (KJV)

The same principle is repeated with marine life (v. 21) and land animals (v. 24–25): everything reproduces “after his kind.”

In Hebrew, the word used here is מִין (Mîn) — essentially meaning sort, category, or species. The construction leminēhu means "according to its kind."

Here is the undeniable truth of Genesis: The seed determines the harvest.

You cannot plant an apple seed and harvest oranges. You cannot plant grass seed and expect an oak tree. In the exact same way, you cannot plant one KIND of church seed and expect to reproduce another KIND of church harvest.

If we want to reproduce the Jesus Church we read about in the New Testament, we have to go back to the original seed—the priorities, practices, doctrines, and Holy Spirit power of the church Jesus established and the apostles carried forward.

Recovering the Pattern, Not Just the History

When we study the Book of Acts, our goal is not to recreate first-century Greco-Roman culture. We don't need to wear tunics or speak ancient Greek.

Our goal is to recover the Kingdom principles, priorities, and practices that made the early church what it was:

  • Devotion to Apostolic Doctrine: They were anchored in foundational truth, not shifting cultural trends (Acts 2:42).

  • Unshakeable Fellowship & Communion: They shared life together, broke bread from house to house, and walked in radical unity.

  • Fervent Prayer: They didn't pray weak, doubting prayers; they prayed faith-filled prayers that shook cities.

  • Bold Evangelism: They saw souls saved daily because they refused to keep Jesus to themselves (Acts 2:41, 47).

  • Supernatural Power: Signs, wonders, and miracles followed them to demonstrate God's power to an unbelieving world (Acts 2:43).

  • Radical Generosity & Service: They met each other’s needs with open hands and selfless hearts (Acts 2:44–45).

  • Joyful Praise: Worship was their natural overflow, engaging God with gladness and simplicity of heart (Acts 2:46).

Before church became buildings, slick production, programs, or institutional traditions, it was a Spirit-empowered movement devoted to advancing the Kingdom of God under intense persecution.

Shifting from Comfort to Pursuit

Why does the modern church often feel so different from the early church?

In America today, we enjoy unprecedented religious freedom, yet we often take it for granted. Far too many believers have settled for comfort, passive attendance, and spiritual consumerism. We attend services when it's convenient, serve only when recognized, and expect miracles without personal devotion.

Potential without pursuit is nothing.

The early church didn't just "attend" church—they were the church, fired up for Jesus and His cause. They didn't have massive budgets or elaborate technology, but they had Holy Spirit power and relentless conviction.

If we want early church realities—if we want to see lives transformed, miracles manifested, and souls added daily—we must adopt early church devotion. Things must change!

What Seed Are You Planting Today?

Everything reproduces from its own KIND. God has called us to be a people who reproduce the character, love, and power of Jesus in our homes, our community, and our city.

As we faithfully sow the authentic seeds of the Kingdom—caring about the mission, serving selflessly, praying boldly, and sharing the Gospel—God promises to bring the increase.

Let’s stop settling for comfortable religion. Let's return to the seed, embrace the pattern, and build THIS KIND of Church.

With Love,

Pastor Doc Murphy
